NTA NET 2021 || Exam Overview

The National Eligibility Test (NET), also known as UGC NET or CBSE NET, is an exam to determine eligibility for Assistant Professor only or Junior Research Fellowship & Assistant Professor Both, in Indian Universities and Colleges.

It aims to ensure minimum standards for the candidates in teaching professions and research. On behalf of the University Grants Commission (UGC) till June 2018 the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) conducted the NET in 84 subjects at 91 selected Cities of spread across the country. From Dec 2018 onwards, the UGC- NET exam is being conducted by the NTA.

The award of JRF and or Eligibility for Assistant Professor depends on the aggregate performance of the candidate in Paper-I and paper-II of UGC-NET, According to your rank, the first 10–15% of appeared candidates get JRF qualification and others get the NET qualification.

  • The score of NET is valid for a lifetime whereas a score of JRF is valid only for 2 years.

NTA NET 2021 || Exam Pattern

First of all, you must know the pattern & the marking scheme of the NTA NET 2021 written exam.

The UGC NET written test is conducted through online mode in two sessions, i.e., paper 1 and paper 2. Candidates who are preparing for the UGC NET exam are advised to go through its complete exam pattern.

The Paper I or General Aptitude section is mandatory for candidates of each stream, while Paper 2 is the subject decided by the candidates from the given list from which he/she want to do post-graduation.

The main objective is to assess the teaching and research capabilities of the candidates. The test aims at assessing the teaching and research aptitude as well. Candidates are expected to possess and exhibit cognitive abilities, which include comprehension, analysis, evaluation, understanding the structure of arguments, deductive and inductive reasoning.

The candidates are also expected to have a general awareness of teaching and learning processes in the higher education system. Further, they should be aware of the interaction between people, environment, natural resources and their impact on the quality of life.

NTA NET 2021 || Paper 2 Detailed Syllabus

Paper 2 of the UGC NET exam will be based on the subject selected by the candidate. The candidate can choose any one of the 81 available subjects. The UGC NET Paper 2 will comprise 100 questions of 2 marks each. All questions will be compulsory. The paper would cover the entire syllabus (including all electives, without any options).

1.What is NTA UGC NET Exam?

  • The University Grants Commission (UGC) has given the responsibility of conducting the UGC NET Exam to the National Testing Agency (NTA).
  • NTA has been established as a premier, autonomous and self-sustained testing organization to conduct the different entrance examinations including UGC NET December 2019.
  • UGC-NET Exam is a test being conducted to determine the eligibility for Assistant Professor only or Assistant Professor & Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) Both in colleges and universities.

2. What are the benefits of qualifying UGC NET? What happens after clearing the UGC NET exam?

The Career benefits after qualifying the UGC NET Exam are as follows:

  1.  Become an Assistant Professor/ Lecturer in any of the UGC Approved Universities.
  2.  Become a Research Fellow, Project Assistant or Research Analyst in any of the prestigious organizations, universities or laboratories.
  3.  Apply for highly reputed Public-Sector Organizations in India.
  4.  Publish your own research.
  5.  Start teaching Undergraduate or Post Graduate students or educational professionals.
  6.  Be a guest faculty in universities and institutes.
  7.  Work as a lab assistant.

3.Whether the examination will be offline or online?

The exam will be a computer-based test (i.e. online) and will be conducted through computer-based online mode only.

4.Will NTA reserves its discretion to fix the center in a city that is given in the Annexure-I?

As far as possible, the candidate will be given a choice from the options he/she has applied for the exam. However, it may need to use discretion due to administrative reasons.

5.How long will the result of the NTA UGC-NET exam be valid?

For Junior Research Fellowship: The validity period of the fellowship is three years (3 years) with effect from the date of issue of JRF Award Letter. However, in case the candidate who has already joined M.Phil. /Ph.D., the date of commencement of Research Fellowship shall be from the date of declaration of UGC NET result or date of their joining, whichever is later.

For Assistant Professor: It is a valid lifetime.

6.Where will the UGC NET qualified candidate get the E-Certificate?

The role of the National Testing Agency is only up to the conduct of the UGC NET Examination and declaration of result. The E-certificates to a qualified candidate is issued by UGC- NET Bureau. So, the candidates who will qualify in NET/JRF may contact Head, UGC NET Bureau, University of Delhi, South Campus, Benito Juarez Marg, New Delhi, Pin Code-110021. 

7.Is there any negative marking in the NTA UGC-NET exam?

There is no negative marking in UGC-NET exam.

 8.Am I eligible for UGC NET after a PG diploma?

 If you have completed your PG Diploma from a recognized university or institution, you are eligible.

9.What is the age limit to apply for UGC NET Exam?

 As per the UGC NET Eligibility, there is no age limit for the assistant professor while the age of the candidates for the JRF should not exceed 30 years.

10.Will distance education be acceptable for UGC NET?

Yes, distance education is accepted for the UGC NET Exam only if you enrolled in UGC approved or recognized institute or university.

11.What action is to be taken if the candidate has opted English as a medium for examination and wants to appear in the Hindi medium?

The medium should be filled while applying the online form. You can also choose the medium during the examination.

12.I have no access to a computer and no experience with the computer-based examination. How can I prepare for the exam?

National Testing Agency will identify schools and colleges with internet and computer facilities. The same will be assigned as Test Practice Centers for facilitating free practice sessions on every Saturday and Sunday for UGC-NET December 2019 aspirants. An NTA App is also available for the same.

13.What are the enclosures/documents that should be attached to the confirmation page to be sent to the Board?

Candidates are not required to send/submit any documents including Confirmation Page to NTA through Post/Fax/By Hand.

14.What is the difference between NTA UGC NET and CSIR UGC NET?

 The Main difference between CSIR NET & UGC NET is that CSIR NET is conducted for the science stream candidates in five subjects while the UGC NET Exam is conducted for arts, commerce and other streams for 81 subjects.

 15.What is the salary of a UGC NET qualified person?

After qualifying the UGC NET Exam, the assistant professor gets the salary of around INR 30000-45000 per month while the candidates, who applied for JRF get INR 25000 stipend. 

16.How many attempts CSIR NET?

There is no restriction upon the number of attempts. If they are appearing for JRF you have to remember the upper age limit i.e. 28 years. For Assistant Professor, there is no upper age limit. Candidates having or pursuing their Master’s degree in Science Stream are only eligible to take this exam.

17.Are there any changes in the syllabus of UGC NET 2021?

No. The syllabus has been revised in 2019 and no changes are expected to be made in UGC NET 2021 syllabus.  

18.Do I have to appear for both the papers?

Yes. You have to appear for both the papers. The duration of the exam is 3 hours and candidates have to complete both the papers in this time only. No breaks will be given in between the exam.
